The Palio di Siena…full immersion!
The Palio di Siena is a spectacular, “equestrian tournament”, with horses careering at full speed, and probably the most famous in the world, in which the horses from the city’s 10 districts, known as “Contrade”, compete in Piazza del Campo.
In the afternoon of the eve of the tournament, let yourself be carried away by the atmosphere rich with passion that fills the streets of the city. Visit the Museum of the Oratory of the Contrada that is hosting you and participate in the outdoor propitiatory dinner in the Contrada, where you will taste the traditional dishes of Siena accompanied by plenty of wine, in a joyful atmosphere, with songs that spur the jockey on to victory.
…and the next day, no later than 5 pm, in Piazza del Campo, from a stand at the Curva del Casato, you can witness the arrival of the historical procession with over 600 participants, accompanied by the constant ringing of the bell in the Torre del Mangia tower of Palazzo Pubblico.
…at around 7 pm, with a burst of s firecracker… the horses enter with their jockeys who are approaching the “mossa” (area where the race starts)… silence falls over the whole square… there is a surreal atmosphere… the tension is very high and palpable… the Mossiere (starter) calls the Contrade (districts) one by one and then, finally … the race begins!
…the square goes wild, the careering speed, sometimes fierce… a special charge of adrenaline… a unique and exclusive experience that people who are not from Siena are rarely allowed to experience.
